The Avantgarde Festival, Schiphorst, 2012 (2012)
The Avantgarde Festival happened every year for over 10 years in Schiphorst, a small town outside Hamburg, in northern Germany. It was organised by Jean-Herve Peron of Faust and his family, and was once memorably described by musician Chris Cutler as "Three days of utopia".
In 2012 I was invited to take part in the festival. I set up a portrait studio with my wife Claire, and over the course of the festival we took several hundred portraits of musicians, helpers, and audience members. Everything was shot on film, and processed and printed by hand by me.
